At the end of the 19th century, Muslims constituted approximately 40% of the population within the borders of present-day North Macedonia. The Muslim population comprised almost 40% Turkish and 40% Albanian Muslims. The remainder consisted predominantly of Bulgarian/Macedonian Muslims (Torbesh), with smaller minorities of Caucasian muhajirs and Romani (Gypsy) Muslims.
