Genetic East Eurasian Heritage in Western Turks
Categories: Middle East and Caucasus
In Turkey, scholars estimate the genetic East Eurasian heritage among ethnic Turks at an average of around 10%. This constitutes one-fourth of the East Eurasian proportion found in an average medieval Oghuz Turk (40% EE).
However, this ratio clearly varies regionally. For instance, while it stands at around 15% in the Mediterranean coastal provinces, results show that it drops to around 8% further inland.
As another example, looking at the Eastern Black Sea region, the northern part of Giresun Province hovers around 15%, whereas in Trabzon, Rize, and Artvin, this proportion drops markedly below 1%, revealing a very distinct line. This line begins at Kürtün in Gümüşhane and descends to Şalpazarı and Beşikdüzü in Trabzon.
Similarly, Giresun is split in two, with the north possessing 15% and the south 7% EE. Here, the distinction between Giresun and Şebinkarahisar manifests once again.
