Cultural Structure & Sub-Identity in Afyon
Categories:
Even in the provinces presumed to be the most uniform, highly complex structures exist.
- The old sedentary agricultural population that we call "Yerliler" (locals), sometimes also called Manavs.
- Yörüks, the pastoral nomadic population of the 'Old Ottoman' territory. They were forcibly settled after the Tanzimat.
- Turkmens, nomads arriving from the Maraş-Urfa-Aleppo region starting from the late 15th century.
- Karabakhis, Sunni Azerbaijanis who sought refuge in the Ottoman Empire during the wars of Shah Abbas in the 17th century.
- Caucasians, Circassians and Abkhazians who migrated after 1864 and 1878.
- Tatars and Nogais migrated from the region between Crimea and the Danube roughly during the same period as the Circassians.
- The term Muhacir, on the other hand, refers to those arriving from the Balkans after 1878 or in the 20th century.
